How much does Composer cost?

I struggled with choosing a price for Composer. All of the software I personally released has been open source. Some people have generously made voluntary donations in appreciation of how useful they found MultiMarkdown, and for the many hours of their own lives it has saved them. But the software was free.

When I decided to form MultiMarkdown Software, LLC to release Composer, deciding on a price was a difficult decision. On the one hand, I know there are many of you would gladly pay $20, $30, $40, or even more based on how much more productive you can be when writing with MMD than without it. You’ve told me as much.

On the other hand, there are many people out there who are not familiar with Markdown or MultiMarkdown and wouldn’t pay that much for an application that they don’t fully understand yet. At some point, I might come up with a demo version of Composer, but that doesn’t exist at the moment. I don’t want the price to be so high that people shy away from trying it out.

I’m going to start with an introductory price of $7.99. I believe the app is worth far more than that. Hopefully you do, too. And if you honestly feel that it is worth more than that, you are certainly welcome to make a donation via Paypal to express your gratitude and support further development (note - MultiMarkdown Software, LLC is not a tax-deductible organization). But the price at the Mac App Store is all that you are required to pay.

After the introductory period I anticipate that the price will go up. Depending on sales volume, feedback, and perhaps even curiosity, the price may fluctuate after that. So if you’re going to stay up late at night frustrated that you paid $7.99 for an app that makes your life easier, only to find out a few months from now that it becomes cheaper and you could have saved a couple of bucks — then maybe you should wait. I want you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you’re going to be upset if you wait past the introductory period, and the price goes up a few bucks and you missed out — then don’t wait.

The only thing I can predict is that at some point, the price of MultiMarkdown Composer is going to change. It might go up. It might go down. It might do both (though obviously not simultaneously). I’m trying to balance fairness, market forces, the countless hours of my life I’ve devoted to creating MultiMarkdown and Composer, and making this venture profitable.

Regardless of what happens, I have enjoyed the journey, and I thank you for your support.
